# Parkinson's voice exercises at home

Parkinson's often makes a voice quieter and less clear over time, and the people it affects are usually the last to hear it. Daily practice with feedback is how the change gets noticed and worked on.

## Why does Parkinson's affect the voice?

The same changes that affect movement affect the muscles used to speak and to breathe. Volume drops, speech can become fast or slurred, and the range the voice moves through narrows. The difficult part is that internal perception changes too — a voice that sounds normal from the inside can be much quieter than it feels.

That gap is the reason feedback matters. Seeing a loudness reading is very different from being told to speak up.

## What does daily practice look like?

Speech therapy programmes for Parkinson's, including LSVT, are built around daily exercises with high effort and immediate feedback, and the home practice between sessions is essential for making progress. Use pitch and volume targets to guide your practice, with a clear record to help structure sessions and track progress.

## What about swallowing?

Difficulty managing saliva is common with Parkinson's and is a separate problem from voice. A prompt at a set interval — a vibration or a discreet tap on the wrist — is a simple way to re-establish a swallow that has stopped being automatic.

## Which apps help with this?

- [Voice Analyst](https://speechtools.co/voice-analyst.md) — Voice Analyst measures the pitch and loudness of your voice in real time, records what you say, and saves the statistics so you or your therapist can track how your voice changes over time. It won the Medilink South West award for Digital Health. (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android)
- [DAF Pro](https://speechtools.co/daf-pro.md) — DAF Pro plays your own voice back to you after a short, adjustable delay – a technique called delayed auditory feedback. Many people who stammer or have Parkinson’s find that it helps them to slow down and speak more steadily. (iPhone, iPad, Android)
- [Swallow Prompt](https://speechtools.co/swallow-prompt.md) — Swallow Prompt vibrates or beeps at an interval you set, as a discreet reminder to swallow — for people who have difficulty managing a build-up of saliva, often because of a neurological condition. (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android)

## What these apps do not do

These are practice tools, not treatment, and none of them diagnoses or manages Parkinson's. They are most useful alongside a speech and language therapist, who can set the targets that make practice worth doing.
